[Jun. 18, 2001, President, Hiroshi TANAKA] 　 -----------------------[Digital Biocolor News]----------------------- News : The 3rd International Conference on Multispectral Color Science (MCS'01) - A Brief Report ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This academic conference was held according to the following schedule. Term: June 18(Mon.) - 20(Wed.), 2001 Venue: Carelian Science Park, Joensuu, Finland This annual conference is focused on multispectral color imaging andthe first and the second ones were held at Chiba University in Japan.This time, forty-two attendees gathered mainly from Finland (17 people) and Japan (19). Besides twenty oral presentations and some posters, there were sessions for introducing incubational venture business and commercial products closely related to this field. Presented papers were mainly focused on basic researches or theoretical studies. There were only a few contributions on biomedical applications, for example, spectral analysis of skin color and vitality estimation of plants using their spectral reflectance. Regarding medical application, Professor Miyake, the Vice President of the Society, introduced his previous work on colon endoscopy, which was found to be quite bracing by many in the audience. On the final day, a committee meeting focused on international collaboration among the leading research bodies of this field was held. Issues like exchange programs of teaching staffs and students, establishment of an original home page and so on were actively discussed. These discussions also provided very useful orientation to the Digital Biocolor Society. One of outstanding features of this meeting was all sorts of enjoyable social programs, for example, dinner at the shore of a beautiful lake, a bus and cruise tour to a scenic spot and wild saunas of an unspoiled Finnish style. All attendees enjoyed these to their hearts' content and were greatly impressed by the warmest hospitality of the Finnish hosts. Term: June 24(Sun.) - 29(Fri.), 2001 Venue: Rochester Riverside Convention Center, Rochester, NY, USA This quadrennial meeting, dubbed the Olympiad of Color Science, is organized by the International Colour Association, which is an international organization of color scientists. Over 400 people gathered from all over the world. Subjects of over 260 presentations and posters varied from engineering issues such as color management or colorimetry and psycho- physiological issues such as mechanisms of optical illusions, to socio-cultural issues such as urban scenery, dress design, educational or psychological effect of color and so on. Although all of articles were focused on color, certain impressions of inconsistency were there. There was a commercial exhibition of less than 20 companies and the scale was not so large. In the engineering field, most presentations still stayed inside the RGB color space. Only one session that had seven speakers including Professor Miyake, the Vice President of the Society, was focused on spectral issues. Even in the engineering field, it seems that the extraordinary possibilities of multispectral imaging have not been sufficiently recognized yet. One of interesting activities is the international credit exchange program via remote education among the leading research bodies in this field, which is expected to lead to a global mega-competition among universities and institutes in this research area. Rochester locates in a vast, extended woodland on the south of Lake Ontario and is famously the headquarters of Kodak and Xerox. In the suburbs, homes and shopping centers all have immense dimensions and no one can live there without an automobile. Fortunately the weather was very fine and one could enjoy magnificent landscapes.
